Good morning!

After a huge year in the hospitality industry we have finally come to the Christmas season. For some it is a time of rest and reflection, for others it is boisterous family holidays. However for many in our industry it is peak season in the kitchen.

Our team have been busy putting together a busy program of shows and seminars for next year. These include the new Aged Care Catering Summit. Read this month's newsletter for more details.

NEW! Aged Care Catering Summit Launched

It is an exciting time for the aged care sector with massive growth in resident numbers and expectations. Nowhere is this more evident than in the kitchens and dining rooms of modern retirement facilites across Australia. That is why the Aged Care Catering Summit has been organised to run alongside the Foodservice Australia exhibition in Sydney on Tuesday 29 May.

Aged Care

This important event will pull together the industry leaders and experts for a day of inspiration and learning. There will be dedicated sessions on food trends, kitchen technology, hospitality design, consumer research, nutritional standards, staff training and overseas developments. Speakers include John Casey from Aveo, Cherie Hugo from Lantern Project, Peter Morgan-Jones from Hammond Care and Lyn James from Maggie Beer Foundation.

Sessions will run from 9am-3pm with a light lunch and visit to the tradeshow, and the cost is only $249 per person. Organisers welcome enquiries from delegates as well as potential speakers and sponsors wanting to be a part of this special day. Call Kirsty on 03 9999 5460 or click on the link.

Dinesmart helping the homeless at Christmas

The DineSmart campaign is well underway, with many restaurants joining in over the festive season to help raise money for the homeless. From 24 November to 24 December participating restaurants are adding an optional $1 per person donation to their bill.

High profile restaurateurs Chris Lucas (Lucas Group), Erez Gordon (Bishop Sessa), Justin Miles (Windy Point) and Sam Christie (Longrain) are ambassadors for the program and Uber Eats has pledged $10 for every new customer signed-up during the campaign.

Amazing turnout for Sydney Foodservice show

The Foodservice Australia show scheduled for Sydney next year is shaping up to be the best hospitality industry event ever seen in this country, with a remarkable range of exhibitors and special events.

Professional competitions include the popular Chef of the Year, Savour Patissier of the Year and Australian Pizza Championships. These will be joined by the new ACF Battle of the Pacific with restaurant teams from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands.

There will be over 300 exhibitors with the biggest names in the food and equipment space joining the show for the first time. They will be showing the latest trends from around the world. Only a small number of stands remain available and will be snapped up over the coming month.

Chefs Judging

Event Director Tim Collett says he is looking forward to the move to the new convention centre in Sydney. He says "We will have a lot more space but have deliberately kept the show focused and all on one level. This means visitors and exhibitors will have an amazing experience".

Celebrating the best 30 under 30

Foodservice Magazine is calling for entries for a new initiative recognising the top thirty industry players under 30 years of age.

Editor Anita Conners says "30 under 30 is a celebration of the young guns of the hospitality industry. It will celebrate excellence by those who are shaping the future of Australian foodservice".

The winners will be announced at an exclusive cocktail party to be held at the Foodservice Australia exhibition in Sydney on Monday 28 May, and published in a special edition of Foodservice Magazine.

Open your Exhibitor Manual

This month the exhibitor manual has been sent out to all the companies booked into the Foodservice Australia show in Sydney

  • If you are booked into the show make sure you received an email with your user name and password. If you did not receive then contact Cassie on 03 9999 5460 or email her
  • Open your manual and read through the information section. It's good to print it out and put in a folder. Keep everything about the show in one place.
  • Get going - open the first order form and enter your catalogue details. That puts it straight up on the website. You can change your text anytime.
  • Have a quick look at the other forms. There is no rush but it is good to know what you need to know.

Speedy rise in food deliveries

Foodservice home delivery sales are up by 20% on this time last year according to new research by the NPD Group. Millennials are the biggest customers, accounting for 50% of home deliveries. Meanwhile a number of restaurants are pushing back on the cost of home deliveries, while others are setting up seperate kitchens.

This is a burning topic for all cafes and restaurants. And that is why it will be discussed at the National Restaurant Conference running in Sydney on Monday 28 May. Come along and hear from other operators about their experience and give us your thoughts.

We are closing the office for Christmas

Watch for scams

Events are targeted by scammers just like every other industry. If you are exhibiting then make sure you watch out for companies selling 'genuine visitor lists' and 'free catalogue listings'. Both are scams with no connection to the show. If in doubt give us a call.

Meet the team

Sarah McGovern has been an important part of the foodservice team for almost two years. As a senior account manager she helps suppliers who want to exhibit and meet all the buyers.

Before starting on the food show Sarah worked for venues in her native Britain. In the last few years she has worked in hospitality recruitment here in Melbourne.
